Physicist appointed president of Sun Yat-sen University

GUANGZHOU, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) - Xu Ningsheng, one of China' s top physicists, was appointed the new president of Sun Yat-sen University Thursday, the university announced.

Sun Yat-sen University or Zhongshan University is a prestigious university in south China, located mainly in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province. The university is named after Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a physician and founder of the Kuomintang Party.

Xu became the 22nd president of the university since its founding in 1924, succeeding Huang Daren.

Xu, born in 1957, is a PhD graduate from the UK' s Aston University, majoring in electrical engineering. Prior to his appointment, Xu was vice president of the university.
