Pakistan: Government intervenes as cotton exports rise

Write: Cordell [2011-05-20]

Pakistan has made it compulsory for local exporters to register their orders with the Trade Development Authority as a way to monitor cotton yarn exports from the country.

The government follows demands for a ban on such exports from the local garment sector as a number of textile factories have been on strike to demand the government to ensure availability of raw materials for the local value added industry.

Every year, Pakistan produces about 3 million tonnes of yarns, out of which around 75% are consumed locally for textile products including readymade apparel.
