BHUBANESWAR: After reporting a multi-fold growth in its exports, the State is eyeing for more through improved brand building.
In the last five years, Orissa's exports have jumped from Rs 5,391 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 14,643 crore in 2008-09.
According to Industries Minister Raghunath Mohanty, stiff competition in international trade calls for new as well as innovative ways of boosting the State's exports. More number of road shows and buyer-seller meets could provide a better platform to the State.
In fact, Engineering Exports Council of India is hosting the Reverse Buyer Seller Meet at Kolkata on March 12 to promote trade and build business contacts with ASEAN countries, South Asia and Africa. Orissa would also take part in the meet where the State hopes it would develop contacts with buyers, importers, dealers, distributors and wholesalers of the engineering products from these countries. The State has already started doing spadework for the meet so that it is able to showcase its tremendous mineral resource base which forms the base for engineering and allied industries and that's what the State wants to promote.
Going by statistics, a lion's share of the State's earnings come from the export of aluminium conductors, cables, transformers, CI products, LPG cylinders, full hard rolled coils, chemical and allied products like refractories, cement, paper, tyres, tubes and pesticides.
In the fiscal 2008-09, the State exported such items to the tune of Rs 470 crore and the Government wants to give a push to them.
While small and medium industries have played a significant role in export performance of the State, the Government is hopeful that mega plants, when they go on stream, would add to the volume as well as earnings.
At the recent road show, Industries Secretary Saurabh Garg laid stress on the fact that the steel and aluminium sectors would have a significant bearing on the export performance.
