Bleak environment continues for China's mechanical watch industry
China's mechanical watch industry expects overseas revenue to remain flat throughout 2010 after a steep decline in sales last year.
From January to October 2009, the country's suppliers exported 6.3 million automatic and handwound timepieces without precious metal components. The shipments were worth $33.4 million. Volume and value dropped by 60 and 37 percent compared with the same period in 2008.
According to producers, no dramatic increase or decrease in demand is foreseen as fashion and sports watches capture consumer interest.
In the months ahead, makers will concentrate on midrange models, which currently account for 70 percent of shipments. This is because low-end designs do not generate healthy profits, while high-end styles are not yet sophisticated enough to compete with Swiss counterparts.
Prices of mechanical timepieces vary based on materials, and the accuracy, durability and complexity of movements.
Varieties for the low end are between $1 and $5. They have zinc alloy cases, PU leather straps, and acrylic or glass crystals. Locally sourced movements are utilized.
