Flat lens array improves video projector quality
A new way of producing arrays of thousands of microlenses from glass could lead to better and cheaper video projectors.
Researchers at the German Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology have developed a way to manufacture the lens arrays, which could previously only be made in plastic that would melt when used in projectors.
The flat lens array could replace the more complicated system of lenses placed one behind the other in existing projectors, reducing the space needed inside and simplifying their assembly and alignment, as well as reducing the lens cost by up to 90 per cent.
