Free workshop invites women to learn about welding

Women who may never have considered a technical job are invited to try welding in a no-stress workshop where beginners are truly welcome, in fact, they're expected.

The workshop is funded through a work force development grant and is designed for women who wouldn't feel comfortable walking into a shop class where some students might have more background knowledge about tools.

The objective is to help women train for industries where good-paying jobs are plentiful, thus meeting the needs of both new workers and employer

Northeastern Wisconsin women are invited to spend a day at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College this month to learn about welding-related careers.

The one-day Welding Boot Camp for Women will introduce participants to the knowledge and skills used by weld technicians. Discussions, demonstrations and hands-on activities will be combined to help participants understand related careers and industries.

The workshop includes basic information about the following welding processes: SMAW, Shielded metal arc welding, GMAW, Gas metal arc welding and GTAW, Gas tungsten arc welding and the following cutting processes: Oxy fuel cutting (oxygen and acetylene) and Plasma cutting. Also welding-related education and the job market.

Women who are unemployed or underemployed, and those who might enjoy problem-solving and working independently are especially encouraged to attend.
