A cancer patient could lose one or both of her breasts after undergoing experimental radiation therapy at Hoag Hospital, her attorney said Wednesday.

The 58-year-old woman, referred to as "Jane Doe" by her attorney, Jeff Milman, was the first patient at the Newport Beach hospital to undergo the treatment for cancer in her left breast using the Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy System, according to a report in the Orange County Register.

The patient, who has filed a lawsuit against the hospital, was treated on June 24, 2010, after waiting several weeks for the system's manufacturer, Xoft Inc., to get FDA approval, Milman said.
