Han Sanping, chairman of China Film Group, recently announced that the first part of John Woo s latest direction Red Cliff is set to be released in early July, 2008. And Mr. Han is very positive about the film s box office performance, saying it ll be a mega hit this summer.
According to the sales division of China Film Group, Red Cliff is set to open on Thursday, July 10th in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on the same day. This date was jointly decided by Director John Woo, the biggest investor of the film China Film Group, and some other investing companies involved. Red Cliff is the most expensive film production in China so far, and investors are pretty positive about its performance in the market. The summer slot has always been the second best time frame in the film distribution area, and Red Cliff is about the change its history with an unprecedented box office results. Now the post production and marketing campaign are under way, counting down to its premiere on July 10th.
The post production process started immediately after December 15th, 2007, when its principal photography was wound up. Due to its grand scale, enormous amounts of CG will be involved. And the post production team has been working on the special effects and editing of the first part day and night. Director John Woo holds great expectations for his latest production. The music will be composed by the veteran Japanese musician Taro Iwashiro whose credits include The Sinking of Japan (2006) and Memories of Murder (2003).
John Woo has promised to the investors that the first part of this war epic will be completed by the end of May, leaving enough time for censorship and the big opening on July 10th. The post production for the film s second part is due to be finished later this year and released in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in December, also in a day and date format.
It has been confirmed that at the invitation of the organizers, John Woo will take all his leading actors in the film except Takeshi Kaneshiro to the 61st edition of the Cannes Film Festival. A grand press conference will be held where a 10 minutes long footage of the film will be shown to the media.
