The 8th Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) is ready to start on April 23rd through May 4th, 2008 in the United States. 122 feature films out of 2329 entries from all around the world have been selected for screening at the festival. Lost Indulgence by Chinese director Zhang Yibai will be competing against 11 other feature films from the World Narrative Feature Competition category for the Best Film Award.
In its past six seasons, the Tribeca Film Festival, held in New York City, has attracted a dramatically increasing number of entries from every corner of the globe. However, as TFF Artistic Director Peter Scarlet pointed out that Tribeca has no intention to become a showroom for all the new feature films from around the world. It needs films with unique style to form its own aesthetic characteristics. As a result the festival this year picked up only 122 titles, about 25% down from last year s 159 films.
Nevertheless, the festival has attracted the attention of celebrities like Madonna, Richard Gere, Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Sissy Spacek, and Michelle Monaghan to walk on the red carpet. The festival will present 53 World Premieres from 31 countries and regions. And 145 directors will be bringing feature works to the Festival, with 66 of these filmmakers presenting their feature directorial debuts.
Twelve narrative features and an equal number of documentary features will compete for combined unrestricted cash prizes amounting to $100,000, which is about the same as the Sundance event. According to Peter Scarlet, the festival this year focuses on family themes. Although the selection team didn t pick up entries with this criteria, a large of number of them can be labeled in the category, such as the opening film Baby Mama starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
The Chinese director Zhang Yibai s new film Lost Indulgence has been selected together with 11 other titles for the World Narrative Features Competition. A visually stunning meditation on loss, Lost Indulgence centers on the complicated relationships between a taxi driver (Eric Tsang), his wife (Pan Hong) and the secretive young woman (Karen Mok) they take into their home after a tragic accident.
