Reuters reported that China manufacturing hub, the province of Guangdong, has started building a natural gas pipeline grid to supply 60 billion cubic meters of the clean fuel by 2020.
Guangzhou Daily said citing a plan by the provincial economic planner a total of 3,170 kilometers of pipelines will lay to link 21 cities in the province at a cost of CNY 47.6 billion.
The figure of 60 billion cubic meters of natural gas will make up nearly 22% of the total energy use in Guangdong, the country wealthiest province and the largest energy consumer by region.
The volume will also be equivalent to 20% of the country total gas demand of close to 300 billion cubic meters as forecast by top energy group CNPC.
The paper said the first phase of the pipeline grid spanning seven cities and 467 kilometers will be ready to take gas by July 2011.
The USD 7 billion project will be a joint investment of state oil majors CNOOC, Sinopec Corp and provincial power firm Guangdong Yuedian Group. It will attract multiple gas sources including the second West East pipeline that pumps gas from central Asia's Turkmenistan, liquefied natural gas from Australia and offshore gas from the South China Sea.
