The coordinator of the Program of Detection and Control of the Huanglongbing, HBL or "yellow dragon", Ricardo lvarez Ram arez warned that if they are not able to contain the disease, it would arrive in Tamaulipas, and 50% of the citrus industry could disappear in just six years.
He noted that the damage to the economy would be brutal since 250,000 people directly and indirectly depended on the citrus activity.
"We are talking about the owners of the orchards, the owners of business that sell products for the citrus sector and even the pickers", lvarez Ram arez said.
He said that according to studies by the SAGARPA, it estimated that if this pest arrives to Tamaulipas in less than six years it would destroy 50% of the orchards that are currently producing.
"Tamaulipas annually generates an output of 460,000 tons of citrus, so the losses would be about 230,000 tons, more than 250 million pesos".
