The Dongpo Academy is located in Danzhou City, Hainan Province. It was originally built in 1098 during the Northern Song Dynasty in memory of Su Dongpo, a well-known literateur and is now a well-known tourist attraction.
Once the highest seat of learning, the Dongpo Academy cultivated many well-known individuals. The academy faces south with a dignified door, which is unique and quaint. Above the door, there are four Chinese characters "Dongpo Academy", written by Zhang Ji, an imperial examination candidate during the Qing Dynasty.
In the courtyard of the academy there is a clear pond spanned by a bridge that leads visitors to the Zaijiu Pavilion. The Zaijiu Pavilion is covered with green tiles whilst on its roof there are paintings featuring the life of Su Dongpo, which are vivid and true to life. On both sides of the pavilion there are the lotus ponds filled with gold fish.
Deep into the courtyard, there is the Zaijiutang, a place where Su Dongpo once taught and met with his friends. This is the main building of the academy and its hall contains 13 tablets written by celebrities. On the rear wall of the hall there are two marble stone inscriptions. One was inscribed by Song Lian, a writer who lived during the Ming Dynasty, and the other is a picture of Su Dongpo created by the famous painter Tang Yin.
The last part of the academy is the Great Hall. In the center of the hall, there is a group of statues of Su Dongpo and his son made of glass fiber reinforced plastic. Next to these there is an exhibitoin of sketches and poems painted and written by Su Dongpo.
