PASSENGERS at Hongqiao International Airport should enjoy a smoother experience tomorrow with the opening of a new terminal.
A transport hub, including a subway, bus stops, parking lots, and shopping and dining areas, will also be in use by then.
Terminal 2 will offer more convenient and passenger-friendly services, said the airport operator.
It will take some 13 to 18 minutes to walk to the farthest boarding gates which are about 300 meters from the security checks.
There are 45 boarding gates in Terminal 2, three times as many as those in the old terminal.
Three transit areas inside the new terminal are designed to improve transit efficiency with a minimum transit time of 45 minutes for domestic flights. Passengers with connecting tickets can avoid a second security check in the transit areas.
The new dining and shopping areas feature brand-name shops and chain food outlets. The restaurants and chain eateries will offer food at the same price as their downtown locations.
The two terminals are not connected. But there will be free shuttle buses between the two.
The western extension of city`s Metro Line 2 will take passengers to Terminal 2 up to 10:50pm. Line 10, will also open a stop next to the terminal by October.
Drivers can park at four parking lots next to the terminal. In addition to signs, the airport operator has given the parking spaces names such as "elephant" and "banana" in a bid to help riders remember where they parked.
The flights of 11 domestic airliners will be moved to the new terminal. Passengers arriving at the airport after midnight tonight should check with their airlines about which terminal they should go to.
The operator will also organize the transfer of more than 7,000 passengers from this afternoon to the old terminal via shuttle buses because 65 flights will be landing near Terminal 2.
