Hong Kong is planning to conduct a large-scale exercise to test the emergency response and co-ordination mechanism for handling a nuclear incident, said the city's Under Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok on Saturday.

Speaking on a radio talk show, Lai said that Hong Kong will take the nuclear crisis in Fukushima Prefecture into consideration when formulating the drill, adding that overseas experts will be invited to monitor the exercise and make recommendations.

Lai said at a special Legislative Council meeting later that the government has taken appropriate and necessary measures to help Hong Kong people in Japan, and urged the public to stay calm.

The Customs and Excise Department has been conducting radiation checks on goods imported to Hong Kong. It has so far checked five containers and 52 batches of goods comprising 299 commodities imported by air. They were all confirmed to be safe.

Under Secretary for Food and Health Gabriel Leung said that the government will ensure a stable and sufficient food supply.

So far, more than 1,300 arriving travelers requested radiation checks and all were confirmed safe.
