Lufthansa's supervisory board on Wednesday approved orders for 35 new aircraft comprising 25 Airbus A320neos, five A321neos and five Boeing 777 freighters.
"Besides greater fuel efficiency, all the models on order will help lower operating costs as well as noise levels and emissions," LH said in a statement. It becomes the fifth company to commit to Airbus's re-engined narrowbody, following ILFC, TAM, Virgin America and IndiGo. Airbus COO-Customers John Leahy noted that the A320neo has "attracted more than 330 commitments".
LH said it will announce an engine selection on the A320neos at a later date. Boeing 777Fs are powered by GE90s. LH said the total value of the 35 aircraft is around US$4 billion based on list prices.
LH noted that the 25 A230neo family aircraft will be used on continental Europe routes. Deliveries are slated to begin in 2016. The 777Fs are scheduled to start delivering in 2013.
