To tamp down rumors about the danger posed by crippled nuclear reactors, the Land Ministry has begun assuring overseas airlines and foreign embassies that Tokyo-area airports remain safe for passengers.
With reports of elevated radiation levels near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant raising concerns, some overseas airlines have begun avoiding Narita International Airport in Chiba Prefecture, the hub serving the Tokyo area. Deutsche Lufthansa AG began diverting Narita-bound flights to Central Japan International Airport in Aichi Prefecture and Kansai International Airport in Osaka Prefecture.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) announced Friday that Japanese airports remain safe for regular operations. In light of this, the Land Ministry began conveying the information to airlines, travel agencies and foreign embassies in Japan. It has already posted such information on its Web site.
