KLM Royal Dutch Airlines today launches its new service to the Chinese city of Xiamen, bringing to seven the number of destinations in China it services from Amsterdam Schiphol airport.
KLM is the only European airline to fly directly to Xiamen. This is also the case with the Chinese cities of Chengdu and Hangzhou. With 43 weekly fights to China, KLM is the European airline that offers the greatest number of direct flights to the country, according to the airline's chief Peter Hartman.
KLM, which used to focus on Japan and Singapore, is shifting its focus to China. A key factor in choosing a destination, KLM says, is the local economic activity. The presence of foreign companies is an important requirement, so are a city's size and its tourist attractions.
In addition to Xiamen, Chengdu and Hangzhou, KLM also flies to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
