AA, Delta Cut Tokyo Schedules; Hawaii Also Loses Flights

The ongoing crisis in Japan continues to impact the aviation industry.
One of the latest moves came today from American Airlines, which says it will suspend two of its six daily flights to Japan amid dropping demand.
The Associated Press writes AA "said Wednesday it will suspend the flights on April 6 and resume them on April 26. One goes from New York to Tokyo's Haneda Airport, the other flies between Dallas and Tokyo's Narita airport."
AP notes AA's move "follows Delta Air Lines' decision last week to suspend service to Haneda, although Delta continues flying to Narita." Still, even there, Delta is temporarily trimming capacity, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Delta operates a large base in Tokyo. The USA's No. 2 carrier says it expects Japan's earthquake and ensuring tsunami and nuclear crisis to reduce its Tokyo revenue by US$250 million to US$400 million, the Journal-Constitution reports.
Flight cuts related to the crisis Japan also are extending the other direction, including to Hawaii -- where the tourist economy relies heavily on Japanese tourists.
Japan Airlines (JAL) says it plans to reduce flights to Honolulu, trimming its Tokyo Narita-Honolulu flight schedule to 14 weekly round-trip flights -- down from 21. The reduced schedule is expected to begin April 6 and extend through April 17.
The Associated Press reports JAL is doing so "because of fewer passengers flying to Hawaii in the aftermath of the tsunami."
