Canada has taken action to enhance aviation safety by limiting high-speed departures for aircraft to a maximum of 250 knots.
The Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Chuck Strahl said in a press release on Nov. 12 that lower-speed take-offs reduce the risk of mid-air collisions, particularly with birds.
"Speed limitations for departing aircraft will better protect air travelers and flight crew," he said. "This new safety measure will help prevent aviation safety incidents upon take-off."
Strahl said that lessening the risk of bird strikes can also reduce flight delays, cancellations and aircraft downtime.
The amendment to the Canadian Aviation Regulations, which was pre-published on Mar. 27, 2009, became effective on Nov. 12.
