Plans for a AU$120 million expansion of Newcastle Airport are gaining momentum, with the state Planning Department issuing its requirements for the project.
It includes the expansion of the terminal, a new multi-storey car park and internal roads at the Williamtown site.
There will also be upgraded airport support services, including aircraft maintenance, freight, fuel and ground support equipment.
In addition there will be a business park containing office space.
The Director General has now issued requirements for a state significant site study.
The airport will need to show that the site is suitable and do a detailed assessment on proposed land use implications.
The project will create more than 6,000 full-time jobs and a final environmental assessment says medium to high priority issues include traffic, visual amenity, energy use and risks to human health and safety.
The airport will discuss the the project with its planners today.
