At least five people were killed on Nov. 24 when a light plane they were aboard fell down as it was taking off from the airport of Monterrey city in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, a local TV reported.
The Antonov was on its way from northern Mexican state Tamaulipas, bound for its base in Mexico City, and had refueled at the airport. It slid off the runway as it was taking off, just after 2:30 p.m. local time, crashed and exploded after 200 meters. Officials confirmed the deaths of five soldiers after the incident, but said the death toll may rise to six.
Commercial flights were suspended for an hour while airport emergency services put out the fire, but they have now been restarted. Runway 11, where the plane was set to take-off, remains closed.
