U.S. stocks slid on Wednesday, with major indexes closing at session lows, even after the Federal Reserve announced measures known as "Operation Twist" to drive down long-term interest rates.

The blue-chip Dow tumbled about 2.5 percent at the close. The broader S&P 500 plunged nearly 3 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped about 2 percent.
