Hong Kong's total assets of the exchange fund amounted to 2.4332 trillion HK dollars (312.15 billion U.S. dollars) in June, down 56.9 billion HK dollars from the previous month, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said Friday.

In June, Hong Kong's foreign currency assets dropped by 8.9 billion HK dollars and Hong Kong dollar assets fell by 48 billion HK dollars.

The decline in foreign currency assets was mainly due to a decrease in unsettled purchases of securities, which was partly offset by purchases of foreign currencies with Hong Kong dollars, it said.

Meanwhile, the decline in Hong Kong dollar assets was mainly due to a decrease in Exchange Fund Bills and Notes issued but not yet settled, sales of Hong Kong dollars for foreign currencies and valuation losses on Hong Kong equities.

Besides, the currency board account showed the monetary base at the end of June was 1.0545 trillion HK dollars, up 4.7 billion HK dollars from May. (1 U.S. dollar is equivalent to 7.795 HK dollars)
