General Motors Co. announced Friday it was recalling 50,500 Cadillac SRX luxury crossover vehicles in North America to reprogram airbags, according to a report by Detnews.
The recall affects 47,401 2011 model year vehicles in the U.S. and the rest in Canada and Mexico. GM spokesman Alan Adler said the company knew of no crashes, injuries or complaints related to the issue.
GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the right side head-protecting air bag would not deploy in a crash if no one was in the front seat. But the owner's manual stated that airbag would deploy whether or not the seat was occupied. As a result, a backseat passenger might not be fully protected during a crash.
GM said the repair only affected vehicles sold in the North American market, because that was where the automatic occupant sensing system was used.
GM will start notifying owners today. The repair, which requires only software reprogramming, is expected to take less than 30 minutes.
