With its integrated approach the Aid by Trade Foundation is constantly working to improve the livelihoods of smallholder cotton farmers. One key aspect of Cotton made in Africa is the environmental footprint of cotton production in order to maintain an environment in which also future generations will find their income in agriculture.
With its stakeholders CmiA defined an environmental action plan setting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in five categories: agro-chemicals, soil-fertility and erosion, water, bio-diversity and general topics.
Continuous improvement is central to Cotton made in Africa (CmiA s) philosophy. In order to learn from each other CmiA brought participating countries together to establish a network to exchange ideas, methods and practical applications. By publishing our environmental action plan, we wish to increase CmiA s level of transparency and to deliver a deeper insight into our work in Africa.
For the outreach to the North American market the Cotton made in Africa initiative is working together with the human rights organization Social Accountability International (SAI) based in New York City. SAI supports the initiative by working to improve the social performance of the spinning mills involved and introducing the program to North American companies.
