Nikkei Tumbles to 5-Week Intraday Low on Italy Debt Crisis

Nikkei fell more than two percent Thursday morning to a five-week intraday low, as investors feared that the spike in the yield on Italian government bonds would worsen the eurozone debt crisis.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 205.50 points, or 2.35 percent, from Wednesday to 8,549.94 after briefly plunging to 8519. 02, the lowest intraday mark since logging 8,463.83 on Oct. 6.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 17.56 points, or 2.34 percent, to 731.84.
All 33 sectors on the TSE lost ground, led by the mining, the securities and the insurance sectors.
