Garment exporters in Erode, a leading textile centre in the south Indian State of Tamil Nadu, will be offering one-month free training in sewing to youths in the region.
The step is being taken in order to address the lack of skilled tailors in the area, which is adversely affecting the garment export volumes.
Textiles & Garments Exporters Association Erode President VP Subramaniyan and Secretary S Sivananthan said the Association would train men and women in the age group of 18 to 35 years at Erode and Dharapuram.
Presently, there are 30 direct and 100 indirect garment exporters in Erode who ship their products to the US, UK, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
Mr. Subramaniyan said that over the past few years, a fall of around 20 to 30 percent has been witnessed in garment export volumes, which is mainly due to shortage of skilled tailors and hence the Association has decided to launch a one-month free training programme.
Mr. Sivananthan added that youths would be trained in cutting, designing and sewing and would also be taught to operate new electric sewing machines.
On successfully completing the training the youth would be offered good salary in the exporters factories, while rural youths would also be paid a stipend of Rs. 2,000 per month, he informed.
