China Unionpay, a national bank card association, said on Tuesday that a leading lender in Brunei, Baiduri Bank, launched the first Unionpay debit card in the Southeast Asia country.
Brunei is the 18th foreign country that has issued Unionpay cards.
This year marks the 20th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the New China and Brunei. The Baiduri-Unionpay collaboration is part of the two countries' efforts to strengthen exchanges and cooperation, said Cai Jianbo, vice president of China Unionpay.
The launch of Unionpay cards in Brunei would enhance convenient payments to business and leisure travelers, Cai said.
Baiduri Bank began offering Unionpay card acceptance services in March 2010. Unionpay cards are currently accepted in more than 80 percent of high-end shops, hotels and restaurants in Brunei.
