South African Agriculture Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson on Tuesday announced that the ban on the export of meat has been lifted.
Speaking in the South African parliament in Cape Town, Joemat- Pettersson said both the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the country's KwaZulu-Natal province and the avian influenza outbreak among ostriches in Oudtshoorn in South Africa's Western Cape province have been brought under control.
According to Cape talk radio station, however, she said ostrich exports from South Africa have not been opened.
"All the animal products, meat and animal products, would be allowed to leave the area and allowed to leave South Africa, so the ban is lifted. However, live animals are still restricted to the reserved area," Joemat-Pettersson said.
