Po Lin Monastery is one of the most popular attractions on Lantau Island, and is also the Buddhism shrine of Hong Kong. It is located on Ngong Ping Plain, located some 520 meters above sea level. The landscape around Po Lin Monastery is wonderfully picturesque.
Po Lin Monastery houses many ancient written sutras and enshrines Shariputra. Besides, the only tea plantation in Hong Kong is located near Po Lin Monastery. This is wonderful for tea lovers, who can sip tea directly from the plantation. If you plan to lodge in Po Lin Monastery, you can watch the sunrise on Lantau Peak, which is 943 meters high and the second highest peak in Hong Kong.
Tian Tan Buddha can also be found beside Po Lin Monastery, its construction taking 25 years. Tian Tan Buddha is the highest outdoor bronze sitting Buddha in the world, standing 34 meters and weighing 250 tons. The face of Buddha is made of bronze, with a total area of 30m . In 1993, an opening ceremony was held for the Tian Tan Buddha and it was finally displayed to the public. Tourists must climb 268 steps to pay homage to the giant Buddha.
