Po Lin Monastery is the most well-known Buddhist monastery in Hong Kong, as it holds a collosal copper idol of Sakyamuni or Tian Tan Buddha, which is reputed as the tallest outdoor Buddha statue in the world. Po Lin Monastery literally means 'Precious Lotus', is located on Lantau island, which is the largest outlying island in Hong Kong. Completed in 1993, the pedestal of the idol is about 111 feet tall.
The monastery was initially named as The Big Hut, it was built by three monks visiting from Jiangsu in 1906. At that time, it was only a shrine. Gradually, more an more monks settled there and it was renamed Po Lin Monastery. In 1930, the monastery expanded further and additional larger halls and temple were set up. Continuously growing with time, it became one of the top monasteries in Hong Kong.
Delicious Chinese dishes are offered at the monastery, while meat and alcohol is forbidden in the monastery.
