Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, straddling the Yangtze River in the northwestern Nanjing and connecting the urban area with Pukou District, is a double deck bridge for railway and highway. It was designed and built by the Chinese. The construction on this bridge started from 1960 and was completed in 1968.
The upper deck is a 4589-m highway bridge flanked by pavements on two sides. The lower deck is a 6772-m railway bridge has two tracks for two opposite trains to depart simultaneously. The main bridge is 1577 m long and the others are approach spans. The approach span of the highway bridge adopts the form of Chinese-style one span and two-way curved arch bridge, and on both railings of the highway main bridge, 200 pieces of cast-iron relief are set. Along the pavement, there are 150 pairs of street lights shaped to resemble magnolia.
The scenery of Nanjing Yangtze River at night is enthralling. The lights open to make the bridge seem like a string of lunar stones across the Yangtze River.
In the 1960s, Nanjing Yangtze River was listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest bridge for a railway and highway.
