Located in Zhong County, at the south bank of the Yangtze River, 278 km away from Chongqing, Shibaozhai was built in the slope of a steep hill along the Yangtze River in 1750 with 9 stories, then upgraded to 12 stories in 1956. Legend has it that the hill was a five-color stone left by Nuwa, goddess of Sky-patching, when she was patching the sky, hence its name Shibao . There is another saying that the rock is much like a stamp, so it is also called Jade Stamp Hill.
Shibaozhai is extraordinary and unique since it was built leaning to the hill with engraving eaves. What s most impressive is that it was made of wood, which is so exquisite and unique that it is crowned as one of the World Eight Unique Constructions , and it is also among a few ancient wooden buildings remained in China. Shibaozhai consists of gate, main halls and attics. There are so many paintings and sculptures that you will never feel boring and tired when climb up the stairs as well as enjoy them. There are three groups of sculptures which are centered on the story of Three Kingdoms in Chinese history, and a temple on the top and a street with ancient China style at the bottom.
Since the water level will be lifted due to the Three Gorges Dam project, government takes unremitting effort to protect Shibaozhai by building a huge and solid enclosure with a great sum of money. When it is finished in 2009, Shibaozhai will take on a new look which is much like a miniascape in Yangtze River.
