Covering an area of 2.1 hectares, Shanghai Grand Theater is situated at People s Square, at the very heart of Shanghai City. With its unique architectural style, this singular theater has become another outstanding landmark of Shanghai.
Designed by a French architect, Jean Marie Charpentier, the building combines the cultural aesthetics of both the East and west, looking particularly resplendent at night as, the white arc-shaped roof joins coherently with the light-sensitive glass curtain wall. Occupying a total area of 62,803 m , this 40 meters high building has 10 storeys, including two underground.
The lobby of Shanghai Grand Theater is approximately 2,000m with white as the key tone, exuding elegance and a purity. There is a large crystal pendant lamp hanging on the roof of the lobby, formed by six pans-piped- shaped lamps. The floor is made of rare Greek crystal marble. In concert with the pillar and stairs, the ambience is one of sophistication and true cultural refinement.
There are three main halls in the theater-Lyric Hall, Drama Hall and Studio Hall- with a total of 1.800 seats. Besides the performance halls, Shanghai Grand Theater also has a restaurant, a VIP room, a caf , as well as underground parking lots.
Since its establishment in 1998, Shanghai Grand Theater enjoys an excellent reputation- both at home and abroad- and has successfully hosted a variety of large-scale performances and shows including opera, music drama, ballet, symphony, chamber music, and drama.
