The Great Wall is also called the "Ten thousand Li Great Wall" in Chinese. It stretches 6,700 kilometers from Jiayuguan in Gansu Province to Shanhaiguan in Hebei Province. The Great Wall crosses mountains, spans large plains and passes through vast deserts. This astonishing miracle of engineering took over 2,000 years to build. It is regarded as the most magnificent architectural achievement of the diligent and wise Chinese people.
Construction of the Great Wall began during the Warring States Period, as a means of defending Chinese territory. In 221 BC, Qinshihuang, the first emperor of Qin Dynasty crushed all rival states and founded the first centralized and unified dynasty in Chinese history. To consolidate the country and protect the territories and borders from invasion from the ethnic minority tribes, he had the walls joined and extended. The wall at that time began at Linyao in Gansu Province and ended in Liaoning Province, reaching a total length of over 5,000 kilometers.
There are a lot of different sections along the Great Wall, such as Badaling Great Wall, Mutianyu Great Wall, Jiayuguan Great Wall, Juyongyuan etc. The best-preserved and most imposing section of the Great Wall can be found at Badaling, and it attracts a throng of visitors from all over the world every day.
