Located in the center of downtown Beijing, to the south of the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square is the biggest square in the world, as it is 880 meters long and 500 meters wide. It was named Tiananmen Square because it is situated in front of the south gate of the Forbidden City- Tiananmen. To the north of the square is China s national flag. The flag is hoisted and lowered every day at sunrise and sunset.
Tiananmen Square has paid witness to the indomitable and dauntless spirit of the Chinese people. Many momentous events happened here, such as the May 4th Movement of 1919, the founding ceremony of the People s Republic of China, the rallies of the Cultural Revolution in 1966 and the 50th anniversary ceremony of the founding of the PRC. After the founding of the People s Republic of China, the square was broadened and Monument to the People s Heroes, Great Hall of the People, and Mao Zedong Memorial Hall were successively built.
Tiananmen Tower is on the north end of the square and was built in 1417, and renamed as Tiananmen after its reconstruction. In 1949, the founding ceremony of the PRC was held in Tiananmen and thus Tiananmen has become the symbol of modern China, and forms part of the design of the national emblem. Its dignified image is a very important part of the Chinese national emblem.
The hoisting and lowering of the national flag at sunrise and sunset is considered important by the Chinese, and it provides visitors who witness it with a special experience.
