Established in 1473 during the Ming Dynasty, Five Pagoda Temple was initially known as Zhenjue Temple. There are five stone pagodas on a stone base, decorated with carved peacocks, elephants and dharma wheels; hence the name, Five Pagoda . Emperor Qianlong repaired the temple twice, both in celebration of his Queen Mother s birthday. The main buildings in the temple are decorated by bright yellow glazed tiles, which show the solemnity and grandness of the imperial temple. The surrounding courtyard is filled with tombstones, stone figures and memorial steles. Nowadays, one can find the Beijing Stone Carving Museum here.
