Shanghai ranked as the most commercially competitive city on the Chinese mainland for the third year in 2010, according to a report by the Ministry of Commerce and Renmin University of China.
Shanghai was followed by Beijing and Guangzhou, said the Annual Report on Urban Commercial Competitiveness, which was released Tuesday.
The comprehensive ranking, which was initiated in 2008 by the ministry, was based on more than 100 component indices, including infrastructure, retail sales, quality of services and interaction with other cities.
"Shanghai is a traditionally competitive city in terms of commerce," said Ma Longlong, an economics professor at the university. "The city aims to become a global center for finance, trade and shipping, which contribute to building up stronger commerce."
Huang Hai, a former senior official at the ministry, advised Shanghai not to rest on its laurels as "other cities are catching up fast."
