Shell has opened a 55,000 b/d bitumen facility at a former olefins feed preparing plant in St. Rose, Louisiana, the company said Tuesday in introducing the new output to the US Gulf Coast market.

The St. Rose facility, near New Orleans, has "substantial storage and well established transportation network," Shell said in a statement released in the US Tuesday and in Europe on Monday.

"The plant is well equipped and capable of producing a wide range of performance graded asphalts and will provide year round dedicated and rateable asphalt supply," the statement said.

In September, Shell Bitumen entered the Florida market when opening asphalt terminals in Lake City and Fort Lauderdale, it said.
