In a People's Daily article, Wen Jiabao says over the past five years, China's western region has witnessed rapid growth in economy, infrastructure construction and environmental protection.
The Premier adds China will try to solve the problem of food and clothing shortages in the western region by 2007.
At the same time, the central government will continue its preferential polices and encourage the relatively backward area to develop distinctive and profitable industries.
