Recently, global chemical giants have grouped their presence in Sichuan under the auspices of Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM). Such leading chemical manufacturers as Celanese, Methanex, Lanxess and Wacker Chemie AG have inaugurated their go west explorations with strategies on human resources.

AICM has launched Chemistry, for better life University Events globally this year and kicked off these events in Chengdu. Martin Kraemer, President of Lanxess China, a world top 500 chemical giant, said on December 5 during his first visit to Chengdu, that the chemistry industry is going west too in the context of global industries moving into the western region of China.

AICM member manufacturers are all enterprises with proprietary high technologies as well as concern on energy saving and emission reduction. We are here to have the global chemistry industry know more about Chengdu and shift their R&D efforts here , Mr. Kraemer said. It was leaned that some of the AICM members have established their business presence in Sichuan.

Most of the time, what people know or hear about chemistry is reports about wastewater spills or poison gas explosion and leakage. Because of this, students keep a distance from chemistry studies. People have misunderstanding about chemistry , Mr. Kraemer tried to correct people s views. He said a successful chemistry business will help purify the environment rather than polluting it. One example he gave was that, the water discharged by Lanxess into the River Rhine is cleaner than the water it has pumped from the river.

2011 is the International Year of Chemistry. AICM s foremost task of its trip to Chengdu is to announce the winners for a Sichuan University debate contest of Chemistry, for better life series events. Some of the winners will have study, internship and even job opportunities with AICM s member multinationals.

It is known to all that Sichuan University has been the Alma mater of a number of professionals in materials and chemistry. For example, Dai Yan, President of Chengdu Galaxy Magnet Co., Ltd. has been a master degree holder in materials engineering of Sichuan University. Wang Yuelin, President of Chengdu Guibao Science and Technology Co., Ltd., Wang Shiwei, one of the shareholders of Lierchem, and the beneficiary owner of Shenzhen Hepalink Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Li Tan and Li Li (who are a couple) are all Sichuan University graduates.
