Guangzhou gears up for better security before Asiad

Security checks would be conducted on major transport hubs in Guangdong and neighboring regions from Nov. 1 until the end of the Asian Games in Guangzhou, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported Wednesday.

Vehicles entering Guangdong from Nov. 1 to 27 will go through security checks and police will check passengers in the vehicle and the items being carried.

To ensure tight security during the 16th Asian Games, the second biggest sports event in the world after the Summer Olympics, 30 checkpoints have been set up on Guangdong s main roads and 24 checkpoints for some roads in neighboring Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi and Hainan.

Surveillance will extend to rivers, coastal areas, airports, railway stations, bus stations, highways within Guangdong and neighboring areas.

In Jiangxi, all postal and express services to Guangzhou will register the information of consignors and articles will go through another security check before being delivered, especially those destined for the Asian Games venues and official hotels.

Guangzhou has been trying to ensure a smooth and successful Games by limiting the number of cars on the city s roads, halting construction work, restricting the sales of kitchen knives or other large cutting tools, among other things.

The Asian Games, which are held every four years, will be held in Guangzhou from Nov. 12 to 27. More than 14,000 athletes, trainers and coaches from 45 countries and regions are expected to compete in 42 sports. (Cao Zhen)
