The China Tourism Research Institute and www.ctrip.com jointly released the 2010 Popular Travel City Rankings List during the Golden Week of the Chinese National Day holidays and the top 10 most popular overseas tourist destinations on Oct. 7.

According to sources, experts comprehensively analyzed the travel features during the Golden Week of the Chinese National Day holidays and reach the following tourism market inventory and Popular City Rankings List based on hotel and air ticket booking data, and the travel conditions of free tours and group tours in main cities and tourist destinations as well as from Web browsing and search statistics.

The top 10 popular cities for traveling are Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Wuhan, Xi'an and Xiamen and the top 10 popular destination cities are Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Hong Kong, Xiamen, Qingdao, Suzhou, Nanjing and Chengdu. The top 10 cities in the overall rankings are Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, Xiamen, Chongqing and Wuhan.

In regards to the general situation of flights, hotels and tourism product bookings, the residents had a high demand for travel during the Golden Week of the Chinese National Day holidays in 2010 and showed a trend of "rapid growth in outbound tourism, a continual rise in inbound tourism, a steady growth in domestic travel and popularity in excursions," and the number of tourists steadily increased compared with previous years.

In regards to the regions of domestic tours, there were three highlights. First, the Shanghai World Expo and the Golden Week together formed a peak of passenger flow, and the tourism market in eastern China was outstanding with the Shanghai World Expo as its driving force.

This was reflected during the Golden Week. Second, tourism in western China has entered a warmer season, and the travel popularity of Yunnan, Tibet Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and other places experienced substantial growth. Third, overseas tours have become more popular, and witnessed substantial growth, especially in long-term overseas tours such as to Europe the United States.

The survey shows that the top 10 popular overseas tourist destinations are Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok, Phuket, Jeju Island, Bali, Malaysia and Cambodia.
