Anti-corruption training arouses debate

Spouses of more than 100 officials in Dongguan participated in anti-corruption training in early September, raising public doubt whether it would be effective or just a show.

Organized by the Guancheng community Party disciplinary committee and women s association in Dongguan, organizers invited Wang Xiaoyin, an instructor with the Dongguan municipal procuratorate, to instruct spouses how to prevent officials from becoming involved in corruption.

Many officials wives accept bribes, from clothes to jewelry. If an official is involved in bribery, his wife will also be investigated, said Wang.

One of the organizers said most of those attending the training session were impressed and hoped to attend more.

Although the public and local media doubted the effect of the training, Yuan Liquan, an official with the Dongguan Party disciplinary committee, said anti-corruption education might not produce instant positive results but as long as officials were continuously warned, corruption could be kept under control.
