Minister Han: to Strive for Success in the Spring Agricultural Production and Ensure a Good Harvest in Summer

April 2-the Ministry held the national video conference on spring agricultural production, aiming to implement the directives by the State Council on this year s droughts and low temperature situation and to further mobilize effort for the spring production. Minister Han stressed that agricultural departments at all levels should take rapid action to pool the strength of technicians and farmers for the spring production to ensure sound development of agriculture and rural economy.

The video meeting delivered and studied the directives made by the State Council on April 1. The Minister remarked that the Central Government had attached great importance to and raised specific requirement for this year s agricultural and rural economic development. Hence, agricultural departments should form a clear vision of this year s situation, follow the arrangement of the Central Government, and work with a sense of responsibility and urgency to propel the spring production so as to guarantee a sound growth of this year s agriculture, and support the development of economy and society.

The Minister said that dealing with the low temperature disaster should be the focus of the work to ensure a good harvest in summer. Now, it was the key time to boost the output of winter wheat. Efforts should be focused on turning the crop from being weak to strong in a timely and urgent manner. Various areas should strive for the goal for stable growth in food production, work against the low temperature and improve field management in spring, so as to ensure a good harvest in the summer.

The Minister requested that the area and timeliness of spring seeding should be guaranteed. In northern China, timeliness should be highlighted to identify main crop varieties and appropriate early varieties. Technologies such as greenhouse film seedling cultivation for rice, seed coating and ridging cultivation of corn should be extended to lay a solid foundation for the good harvest. Subsidies to the purchase of agricultural machines should be implemented as soon as possible, and specialized cooperatives and major operators of agro-machinery should be support to carry out cross-region mechanized seeding. The supply and arrangement of the means of production should be strengthened to crack down on counterfeits and safeguard the interests of farmers.

In terms of the declining prices of live pigs and the subsequent losses of the industry, the Minister stressed that animal husbandry departments and veterinary services should implement relevant policies, enhance technical guidance and service, protect the interests of farmers, safeguard the development of the industry, and ensure market supply. Dynamic monitoring and information guidance should be reinforced to promote the standardized production of live pigs and establish a long-term mechanism for the stable development of the industry.
