Great Mosque is situated in Huajue Si Lane to the northwest of the Drum Tower. For its magnificent scale, it is known as the Great Mosque.
According to the inscription on the tablet preserved in the mosque, the Great Mosque was established in 742AD in the Tang Dynasty, giving it more than 1,200 years of history. After renovations and expansions in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it gradually developed into the present compact, solemn and harmonious complex of towers and pavilions.
Covering an area of around 13,000 square meters, the Great Mosque is divided into four courtyards. The mosque features the integration of Chinese traditional and Islamic architectural styles. It emphasizes Chinese traditional buildings and the Islamic mosque arrangements and decorations with Arabic carvings. The wooden archway in the front courtyard was built in the 17th century, and is around nine meters high, with upturned eaves, painted rafters and carved beams, standing alongside the screen wall. The Honored Prayer Hall, Worship Hall, Shengxin Lou and Phoenix Pavilion are also must-sees in the mosque.
In addition, the Great Mosque houses the Koran, the Mecca Picture, some ancient furniture and statuary brick art.
