It is one of the sacred lakes in Tibet, and is has the highest power station in the world.
The fan-shaped lake is located at an elevation of 4441 m (14,570 ft), covering an area of 648 square kilometers (250 square miles). In Tibetan language, Yamdrok means "the Lake of Swans". Dotted with a dozen islands and abundant in natural resources, Lake Yamdrok is also one of the famous grazing lands and the largest habitat for water birds in Tibet, attracting countless swans and gulls every summer. The lake water is of velvet blue. Together with snow-capped mountains surrounding the lake and the clear sky, all create a stunning scene.
On a steep mountain slope southwest of the lake lies Samding Monastery. It has over 300 years of history, and is the only Tibetan Monastery headed by a female living Buddha.
Lake yamdrok is located between Lhasa and Gyantze. It is about 100 kilometers or about 2 hours drive south of Lhasa.
