NANCHANG, June 15 -- An explosion in a chemical plant in east China's Jiangxi Province Tuesday morning has left one worker dead and another one missing, local authorities said.

The accident occurred at about 5:50 when there were not many workers around, said Jiang Zhiming, head of the government's information office of Le Ping City, where the plant is located.

Preliminary investigation showed the accident might be triggered by the explosion of a reaction kettle in a workshop of the Wangshun Chemicals Company, according to Jiang.

Witnesses said parts of the plant's buildings collapsed during the blast and the glass windows of houses in several nearby villages were shattered.

So far, it is unknown whether the blast would cause any environmental damage, said Jiang.
