A research team led by Prof. Wang Xiaolin with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) completed the preliminary renovation of the largest dinosaur egg in Tiantai, Zhejiang province on April 24.
The dinosaur egg was unearthed in 2002. The ellipsoid-shape egg has a major diameter of 43 centimeters, and a minor diameter of 14.5 cm. "The lines on the egg surface were important features for categorizing eggs. We were careful not to damage it when eliminate the wall rock and sometimes the work was done under microscopes in the laboratory," said Dr. Wang Qiang, a researcher from the IVPP.
Researcher Jin Xingsheng from Zhejiang Museum of Natural History carried out a thorough analysis on the giant egg with an international team after the egg was discovered. Jin claimed the egg was laid by theropod dinosaur and belongs to the macroelongatoolithus xixiaensis, the largest dinosaur egg in the world. His study was published in the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences (Issue 1, 2007).
The egg remained un-renovated for 7 years since its discovery owing to the limited technologies back in 2002.
