During the week-long National Day holiday, which started Oct 1, China reported 592.5 billion yuan ($88.3 billion) in retail sales, up 18.7 percent year-on-year, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Commerce on Oct 8.

The increase is 0.7 percentage point higher than last year.

The holiday also pushed up food prices, as wholesale prices of 18 vegetables in China's major cities rose 3.8 percent from the previous week, and wholesale prices of meat also saw small increases. Edible oil prices rose slightly, with rapeseed oil and peanut oil prices up 0.4 percent and 0.2 percent.

Hot commodities during the holiday centered on household appliances, jewelry, clothing, automobiles and household building materials. In Central China's Henan province, home appliance retailers Yongle and Gome recorded year-on-year sales growth of 107.5 percent and 52 percent.

And in household appliances, energy-saving appliances proved to be fast sellers.
